Your Eyelid Surgery Consultation with Dr. Lee

During your consultation with Dr. Lee, she will examine your eyes, paying close attention to certain qualities such as muscle tone, amount of fat present and the skin’s elasticity. She will also ask you to describe your aesthetic concerns and what you hope to achieve with eyelid surgery. Depending on your needs and goals, your eyelid surgery procedure can include one or more of the following:

  • Removal of excess skin that obscures the natural folds of the upper eyelids, possibly impairing vision
  • Removal and/or reshaping of fatty tissue on the upper eyelids or displaced fat deposits that create puffy, under-eye bags
  • Tightening of lax muscles that cause the eyelids to droop
  • Smoothing out fine lines and wrinkles on the lower eyelids

Eyelid surgery can be performed as a standalone procedure or in conjunction with another facial surgery procedure such as a facelift or rhinoplasty, to produce more comprehensive results. Or, if you are bothered by poor texture, age spots, hyperpigmentation or other similar skin problems, Dr. Lee may suggest laser skin resurfacing to complement the effects of eyelid surgery. She will work with you to design a treatment plan that achieves the best aesthetic outcome.

Procedure Details

Dr. Lee performs eyelid surgery in a fully accredited onsite operating room in her Manhattan office. Local anesthesia, which is administered by a board-certified anesthesiologist, is used to ensure the patient’s full comfort.

Eyelid surgery can be performed to improve the appearance of the upper eyelids, lower eyelids or both. Incisions for upper eyelid surgery are created on the natural creases of the eyelids. Through these incisions, Dr. Lee will remove excess fat, reposition the remaining fat and tighten the underlying muscles for a lifted appearance. The skin will be excised, tightened and smoothed out as needed.

For lower eyelid surgery, Dr. Lee places the incision just below the lower lash line. Through this incision, loose skin and excess fat are removed and/or repositioned for a more natural appearance.

Eyelid Surgery Recovery

The initial recovery for eyelid surgery will take one to two weeks, depending on the extent of surgery and your personal healing progress. During this time, you will need to refrain from normal activities including work and exercise, and rest with your head elevated as much as possible. Bruising, soreness and swelling are normal and should subside over time. Dr. Lee may prescribe oral pain medication to alleviate any discomfort you may feel. Follow-up appointments with Dr. Lee and her team are important as they will monitor your healing and may make modifications to improve your recovery.
